Hunter Cancer Research Alliance offers a number of funding opportunities to support its members. View the current funding opportunities below. The schemes are categorised under general HCRA grants and program or flagship specific grants.

General HCRA opportunities

The purpose of the HCRA Travel Awards is to support HDR students, ECRs and MCRs to present their research findings at conferences and scientific meetings. Interested applicants should read the guidelines found below before emailing completed application form along with supporting documentation to HCRA@newcastle.edu.au.

Domestic travel:

  • The funding amount available to support domestic conference travel (i.e. within Australia) will be capped at $500 (exc. GST)

International travel:

  • The funding available to support international conference travel (i.e. outside of Australia) will be capped at $1000 (exc. GST)
  • Full international conference travel support is available to Early Career Researchers (<5 years post-doc) & Mid-Career Researchers (5 – 15 years post-doc).
  • HDR students are only eligible to receive international travel support up to $500 (exc. GST).

Eligibility per annum: HCRA members are only eligible to receive one travel award (either domestic or international) per calendar year.

Applicable to UON students, staff and conjoints only: You must obtain the necessary pre-approvals outlined in the UON Travel Manual. Pre-approval is not required at the time of making an application to HCRA, however successful applicants should note that no funds will be awarded until travel approval is obtained.

APPLICATION PROCESS

To apply for a HCRA Travel Award please read the guidelines and complete all details on the application form (including written confirmation of the oral or poster presentation) and return via email to HCRA@newcastle.edu.au.

Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis by the HCRA Operations team, in accordance with the eligibility criteria and until such time as the funds for this initiative are exhausted.

Process:

  • Application form is received.
  • Review of eligibility of application.
  • Guidance will be sought from flagship committee should there be a question of eligibility.
  • Should applicant meet eligibility criteria, the application will be approved.

HCRA Statistical Support Grants will be available to HCRA members during 2020 to support members to access statistical support services for cancer research projects.

Statistical support grants of up to a maximum of $2080 are available to HCRA members to support cancer research projects that directly align with the vision and objectives of the alliance.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis by the HCRA Operations team, in accordance with the eligibility criteria and until such time as the funds for this initiative are exhausted.

  • Obtain a quote from the statistical support service.
  • Read the guidelines and complete all details on the application form and return via email to HCRA@newcastle.edu.au. The service quote must also be supplied in a separate document.
  • Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis by the HCRA Operations Team, in accordance with the eligibility criteria and until such time as the funds allocated to this initiative are exhausted.
  • Should applicant meet eligibility criteria, the application will be approved and notify the applicant.The HCRA Operations team will endeavor to provide the applicant with an outcome within two weeks from receiving the completed application and supporting documentation.

HCRA is now welcoming applications for infrastructure funding requests to support clinical cancer research.

The aim of the scheme is to support infrastructure needs of clinical oncology research aligned with the vision and objectives of HCRA.

Clinical Cancer Research Infrastructure Grants for a maximum of $10,000 each will be available to HCRA members involved in clinical research to support essential infrastructure including small equipment purchases, service contracts, software and other research tools. The Lead Applicant must be a CMN employee, however, external collaborations are encouraged.

The funding will be allocated on a quarterly basis. Applications may be submitted at any time and will be considered for funding in the next available round.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Applications are to be made via the Clinical Cancer Research Fund Application Form, available on the HCRA website.
  • All questions on the application form must be answered and relevant attachments included (e.g. supplier quotes, where appropriate).
  • The application is to be completed electronically and signed by all (including external) researchers involved in the grant. The signed application and all relevant attachments are to be emailed as a PDF file to HCRA@newcastle.edu.au.

HCRA have established the Event Sponsorship Grant to support events, seminars, workshops and conferences that assist the training and career development of members and support the dissemination of research findings and the implementation of evidence into practice.

Event Sponsorship Grants of up to a maximum of $1500 per application are available to HCRA members to support formal cancer research meetings that have the primary purpose to train or provide an avenue to share knowledge and collaborate in scientific cancer research.

APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Submit an electronic application form to hcra@newcastle.edu.au
  • All questions in the application form must be answered. If they are not applicable, please indicate.
  • Applicants should clearly identify in their application any information that the applicant requests to be treated as confidential.
  • The application must be signed by at least one of the conference organisers.
  • All eligible applicants will be assessed against the selection criteria and awarded unless funds have been exhausted. HCRA, in its discretion, may choose not to fund applicants.
  • Applications for events occurring early in 2020 may be accepted before the opening date in extenuating circumstances.
  • Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis by HCRA, in accordance with the eligibility.
